Clough Oughter Castle: Situated on an island in Lough Oughter, near Killeshandra, Clough Oughter Castle is a well-preserved medieval tower house dating back to the 13th century. Accessible by boat/kayak.

Cavan County Museum: Located in Ballyjamesduff, a short drive from Belturbet, the Cavan County Museum 

offers a fascinating insight into the history and heritage of County Cavan. 

Tullydermot Falls and Forest Park: While primarily known for its natural beauty, Tullydermot Falls and Forest Park also have historical significance. The area contains remnants of old mill buildings, as well as the ruins of Tullydermot House, a 19th-century country estate.

Crom Castle: Located just across the border in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, Crom Castle is a stunning 19th-century castle set within a large estate overlooking Lough Erne.

Belturbet Cycling Adventure




Belturbet, located in County Cavan, Ireland, offers some beautiful cycling routes amidst its picturesque landscapes. While specific routes may vary depending on your preferences and cycling abilities, here are a few popular options:

Shannon-Erne Blueway: This is a designated cycling route that follows the waterways of the River Shannon and the Erne System.



Kilconny Loop:   Starting from Belturbet this route is approximately a 35-kilometer loop and provides a good mix of terrain for cyclists of varying abilities.

Belturbet to Ballyconnell: Shorter and ideal for beginners or those looking for a leisurely ride. The route follows quiet country roads from Belturbet to the nearby town of Ballyconnell. 

Lough Oughter Loop: This is a longer, more challenging cycling route that takes you around Lough Oughter, a scenic lake near Belturbet. 

Tullydermot Falls and Forest Park: While not strictly a cycling route, Tullydermot Falls and Forest Park near Belturbet offer picturesque trails suitable for mountain biking. 



Fishing



County Cavan in Ireland is renowned for its abundant fishing opportunities, with 365 lakes, rivers, and waterways teeming with various species of fish. Here are some popular fishing spots and opportunities in Cavan:

1. River Erne: The River Erne is within 90 meters of the cabin, and it offers excellent angling opportunities for salmon, trout, pike, perch, and coarse fish. Various stretches of the river are popular for fishing, including stretches near Belturbet and Ballyconnell but the anglers often fish from the jetty in front of the cabin.

2. Annalee River: The Annalee River is a tributary of the River Erne and offers fishing opportunities for trout, salmon, and coarse fish. It flows through parts of County Cavan, providing scenic fishing spots and peaceful surroundings for anglers.

3. Drumlona Quarry Complex: This fishery in County Cavan comprises a series of interconnected lakes and ponds stocked with a variety of coarse fish species, including carp, tench, bream, roach, and perch. It's a popular destination for pleasure fishing and angling competitions.

4. Other Lakes and Rivers: In addition to the major lakes and rivers mentioned above, County Cavan is dotted with numerous smaller lakes, ponds, and rivers that offer fishing opportunities for various species. Anglers can explore these lesser-known spots for a quieter fishing experience.

Hiking Trails Nearby



Here is a small selection of some of the local walking trails available to you.


Turbet Island Loop
Start at the car park beside the bridge in Belturbet about 3km from the cabin.  The loop takes you along the river to a disused railway bridge where you can cross and return along the other side of the river. It is about 1.6km long.

Killykeen Forest Park
About 10 km from the cabin. This park has a range of paved walks mostly along fairly flat ground that run through a forest or alongside the lakes. So you can walk as long or as little as you choose. The tracks are paved so they are suited to bicycles, buggies or wheelchairs too.

Ballyconnell Canal loop to Annagh Lough.
This is an easy walk of about 6Km. Ballyconnell is 10Km from the Cabin.

Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail
This is about 36km from the cabin in County Fermanagh. This is about 6km long in each direction and takes about 3.5 hours to complete. There is a great view at the point where the trail ends but you have to climb some stairs to get to it!

Where to Eat



Cavan had many fine restaurants but below we focus on those that are closest to the cabin.


Belturbet is very well served with take away's if that is what you are after.  Indian, Chinese, Malaysian and pizza are all available on the main street.

If you want a restaurant then there is the 
Castle Sports and Gastro Bar at the top of the main street and a little down the street there is The Seven Horseshoes Hotel and restaurant.


Between them is Cafe Nua which is open during the day and perfect for a coffee and something sweet to go with it.


A little further away in Butlersbridge but well worth the drive is Murph's Gastro Pub.
